The deputy governor of Phetchabun province has stepped up his campaign against potato contract farming in Thailand, urging consumers not to buy chips from the producer. While he did not name names, his Facebook post on Sunday referred to an Aug 24 news report on the contract farming project of Pepsi-Cola (Thai) Trading Co Ltd, the local producer of Lay potato chips. They're going full-steam with monoculture -- a green revolution theory which poisons the land, water and air -- and with a sword hidden in the deceitful contracts cashing in on Thai farmers," Kraisorn Kongchalard wrote. The Kom Chad Luek report gave details on how PepsiCo Thai and the department joined hands in promoting potato contract farming in many northern and northeastern provinces for the production of potato products. The company already approached Phetchabun authorities, proposing to introduce the potato contract farming on the popular tourist attraction Phu Thap Boek mountain, Mr Kraisorn said.
